Kerala Hospital Accreditation Explained: NABH vs. JCI for American and Canadian Patients

NABH is India's national hospital accreditation, run by the Quality Council of India, while JCI is the international Joint Commission's overseas program. Several Kochi hospitals hold one or both, but accreditation varies by hospital and changes over time, so patients should verify status directly before booking.

Why Accreditation Matters When You Travel for Care

What it measures: hospital systems and safety processes · What it does not measure: an individual surgeon's results

When you cannot visit a hospital in person before treatment, an accreditation certificate is one of the few independent signals available. It is an audit of whether a hospital follows documented standards for infection control, medication handling, patient rights and emergency response. The NABH website frames its mission around patient safety and quality based on national and international standards. This guide is informational and is not medical advice, and decisions about treatment belong with your own doctors.

What NABH Is

Full name: National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers · Founded: 2005 · Parent: Quality Council of India

NABH describes itself as a constituent board of the Quality Council of India and says it oversees more than 29,000 accredited or certified healthcare facilities, including hospitals, clinics, laboratories and Ayush institutions, per its official profile. Its hospital standards, assessor training and organizational functioning carry accreditation from ISQua, the International Society for Quality in Health Care. Wikipedia's summary notes that the fifth edition of the hospital standards, released in August 2020, has 10 chapters, 100 standards and 651 objectives.

What JCI Is

Full name: Joint Commission International · Established: 1998 · Reach: more than 60 countries

JCI is a division of Joint Commission Resources, a not-for-profit affiliate of the US-based Joint Commission, according to Wikipedia's entry. The Joint Commission model uses a three-year accreditation cycle with standards that cover areas such as infection prevention, surgical site infections and medication reconciliation. The organization maintains a page on JCI accreditation in India, and that is the place to begin when checking an Indian hospital's international status.

NABH vs. JCI at a Glance

Short version: NABH is India's national standard; JCI is the US-linked international standard.

Who Sets the Standard

NABH is Indian and government-linked through the Quality Council of India, which sits under India's Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. JCI is American in origin and exports a standards manual to hospitals worldwide. Both are legitimate frameworks, and neither is a guarantee of outcomes.

Where Each Is Recognized

NABH's ISQua accreditation means its standards have been benchmarked internationally, which is why many Indian hospitals pursue it as their core credential. JCI is often the credential US-based insurers, employers and medical travel facilitators look for first, which is why hospitals that court American patients tend to display it prominently.

Cost and Effort

Neither body's fee schedule was available in the sources reviewed for this article, so no cost comparison is offered here. In practice, hospitals that hold both are usually the largest operators with dedicated quality departments, and holding both does not by itself make a hospital better for your specific procedure.

How Many Indian Hospitals Hold Each Credential

NABH: thousands of accredited or certified facilities across all programs · JCI: a few dozen hospitals

The NABH figure of more than 29,000 covers all program types, not just full hospital accreditation, and Wikipedia's separate count cites 1,299 fully accredited hospitals, so check which number a source means. For JCI, one 2026 directory counts 47 JCI-accredited hospitals in India, with detailed listings for Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad but none for Kerala. That directory is a private guide and itself tells readers to confirm status in JCI's official listing.

What Kerala's Major Hospitals Say About Their Credentials

Cities covered: Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode · Rule of thumb: trust the hospital's own page, then verify it

Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva (Kochi)

Rajagiri's accreditations page lists JCI accreditation with gold seal status alongside NABH accreditation, NABH–World Stroke Organization stroke certification, an NABH Digital Health Platinum recognition and NABL laboratory accreditation. It is the clearest first-party listing among the Kerala hospitals reviewed.

Aster Medcity, Kochi

Aster Medcity opened in May 2015 on a 40-acre waterfront campus in Cheranallur and was the first Kerala hospital to offer da Vinci robotic surgery, according to Wikipedia. The facilitator Karetrip lists JCI, NABH and NABL accreditation for the hospital, but a commercial facilitator is not an accrediting body, so confirm directly. Bed counts differ by source: Wikipedia says 800 inpatient beds and Karetrip says 670.

VPS Lakeshore, Kochi

Wikipedia states that Lakeshore holds NABH accreditation and operates 650 beds, 43 intensive care units and 10 operation theatres in Nettoor. It was founded in 1996 and began operations in 2003. The source does not mention a JCI listing.

Amrita Hospital, Kochi

The Amrita Hospital entry reports NABH and NABL accreditation, 1,450 beds, 31 operating theatres and 275 intensive care beds. It is attached to Amrita University's medical school. No JCI listing is mentioned in that source.

Other Large Kerala Hospitals

KIMS in Thiruvananthapuram is a 650-bed quaternary hospital with 187 ICU beds, per Wikipedia, and Baby Memorial in Kozhikode has 500 beds and a Level I trauma center, according to its Wikipedia entry. Neither source states an accreditation, so patients considering them should ask for current certificates.

What Accreditation Does Not Tell You

Gaps: procedure-specific volumes · individual surgeon outcomes · post-discharge follow-up

An accredited hospital can still be a poor fit for a rare procedure, and a non-accredited hospital can be excellent, so accreditation is a screen and not a verdict. Hospitals' own pages are marketing as well as information, and standards themselves are revised, which is why the NABH fifth edition dates to 2020. Ask separately about case volumes for your exact procedure, the surgeon's experience, and what happens if you need care after you fly home, a topic covered in our guide to flying home after surgery in Kerala.

How to Verify a Hospital's Status Yourself

Step 1: read the hospital's accreditation page · Step 2: check the accreditor's own directory · Step 3: request the certificate

Start with the hospital's own listing, such as Rajagiri's page above, then cross-check against NABH's searchable hospital portal and JCI's India page. Ask the international patient desk to email the certificate with its validity dates and the exact scope, because some credentials cover specific departments such as a stroke program or a laboratory and not the entire hospital. If a facilitator, not the hospital, is your point of contact, ask them to name the source of every accreditation claim.

Questions to Ask the International Patient Desk

Bring a list: accreditation, volumes, itemized quote, aftercare

Ask which accreditations are current and their expiry dates, how many times the surgeon has performed your procedure in the last year, whether the quote is itemized and what it excludes, and which language and records format the discharge summary uses. NABH publishes programs beyond hospitals, including entry-level and Ayush certifications, so ask specifically which one applies; the NABH program overview lists more than 30. Our comparison of Kerala and home wait times can help frame the scheduling questions.

Logistics After You Choose a Hospital

Visa: check the official portal · Lodging: plan near the hospital · Routing: some itineraries pass through Mumbai

The official Indian e-visa portal lists short medical visits among the purposes of the e-Tourist visa and allows applications between 4 and 120 days before arrival, but medical visa rules are specific, so read our visa and logistics guide for Americans and Canadians before applying. For where to stay, see our roundup of the best hotels near Kerala's top hospitals. Travelers connecting through Mumbai may find the new SAS Copenhagen route useful, as covered in our report on SAS returning to India, and anyone adding recovery time can browse our best places to visit in India this winter.

People also ask

Is NABH or JCI better for hospitals in India?

Neither is universally better. NABH is India's national standard with ISQua-accredited standards, while JCI is the US-linked international standard many overseas patients recognize. Check which credential your specific hospital holds, its expiry date, and whether it covers the whole hospital or only one department.

Which hospitals in Kerala have JCI accreditation?

Rajagiri Hospital in Aluva lists JCI accreditation with gold seal status on its own website, and a facilitator lists Aster Medcity as JCI accredited. Because status changes, confirm through the Joint Commission's JCI India page or the hospital directly before booking.

Is NABH accreditation recognized internationally?

NABH's hospital standards, assessor training and organizational functioning hold ISQua accreditation, according to NABH. ISQua is described as the body that accredits accreditors, which is why NABH is considered benchmarked to international practice. Insurer or employer acceptance still varies by plan, so ask before relying on it.

How do I check if a hospital is NABH accredited?

Use the NABH website and its hospital search portal, then ask the hospital to send its certificate with validity dates and scope. Compare that against the hospital's own accreditation page. A mismatch between the two is a reason to ask more questions before committing to travel.

Does accreditation guarantee a good surgical outcome?

No. Accreditation audits hospital systems for safety and quality, not each surgeon's results. Patients should also ask about procedure volumes, surgeon experience, itemized pricing and aftercare, and discuss risks with their own physician before deciding to travel for surgery.

Do Americans and Canadians need a special visa for treatment in Kerala?

Visa rules depend on the purpose and length of the stay, and India's e-visa portal lists medical treatment among permitted purposes for short visits. Longer or complex treatment may require a different category, so confirm on the official portal and with the hospital's international desk before booking flights.

Facts in this article were checked against current sources as of October 4, 2026. Accreditation status, bed counts and visa rules change, so confirm every detail with the hospital and the official accreditor before booking, traveling or making any medical decision.
