10 Best Places to Visit in India This Winter (November to February)

India's best winter trips run from Kerala's backwaters and Rajasthan's palaces to Gujarat's white salt desert, tiger reserves that reopened on October 1, and the Andaman beaches. November through February brings the driest, most comfortable weather across most of the country, and several marquee events fall inside that window.

1. Kerala Backwaters

Best months: October to March · Base: Alappuzha (Alleppey) · Best for: slow travel, food, Ayurveda

Alappuzha is called the "Venice of the East" and has more than 900 kilometers of waterways, with traditional kettuvallam houseboats built from bamboo, coir and wood, according to Kerala Tourism. The state tourism site gives October to March as the optimal travel period, which makes winter the safest bet for dry weather. The monsoon runs June to September and the famous Nehru Trophy snake boat race is held in August, so a winter visit trades the race and the lush green for calmer water and clear skies. Most houseboat trips are an overnight cruise with meals on board, and village tours cover coir making and paddy cultivation. Pair it with the hill and wildlife stops in our guide to the best places to visit in Kerala, and see our Ayurveda retreat guide if wellness is the goal. Travelers who combine a trip with treatment can read how to check a hospital's credentials in our Kerala hospital accreditation explainer.

2. The Rann of Kutch, Gujarat

Rann Utsav 2026-27: November 1, 2026 to March 7, 2027 · Base: Dhordo, about three hours from Bhuj · Best for: culture, crafts, stargazing

The Rann Utsav tent city runs for four months and is operated by Evoke Experiences with Gujarat Tourism, as Voyagers World reports. This season adds 35 seasonal tents near the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dholavira and more programming featuring Siddi community performances. The festival also showcases Kutch crafts such as Ajrakh textiles, Bandhani sarees and Lippan art on the on-site Haat marketplace, along with stargazing, wellness sessions and curated sightseeing excursions. Dhordo sits roughly three hours from Bhuj, so factor the transfer into flight choices, and Travel Turtle's season announcement reports the dates.

3. Ranthambore and India's Tiger Reserves

Reopened: October 1, 2026 · Zones: Ranthambore core zones 1-5 · Best for: wildlife

Bandhavgarh, Panna, Kanha, Satpura, Pench, Ranthambore, Sariska and Tadoba all reopened on October 1, according to India Wildlife News. Early in the season the grass is tall and tigers can be harder to spot, so the same report advises booking multiple safaris instead of counting on one sighting. Tiger mating peaks from November to April, with roughly 100-day pregnancies, so there is no seasonal guarantee of cubs; cubs generally become visible at around two months old. Carry original photo ID matching your booking and arrive 30 minutes before your slot. The report also says Corbett day visits typically start around October 15. Book only through official forest department portals or authorized operators, as Squid Travel India's reopening guide also stresses.

4. Jaipur, Udaipur and Rajasthan's Palaces

Season: winter is the best time · Highlights: forts, palaces, lakes · Best for: first-time visitors

Rajasthan Tourism says winters are the best time to visit because the desert sun is less intense and the days are pleasant, per its best-time-to-visit page. The state spans 33 districts, with Jaipur, Udaipur and Jodhpur as the best-known cities and Mehrangarh and Chittorgarh among the major forts. Wildlife reserves including Ranthambore and Keoladeo Ghana are on the same official list, so a single trip can mix forts, lakes and wildlife. A city circuit by road plus a Ranthambore safari is the classic combination, and it pairs naturally with the reserve reopening above.

5. Varanasi for Dev Deepawali

Date in 2026: November 24 · Draw: more than a million lamps on the ghats · Best for: spiritual and cultural travel

Dev Deepavali falls on the full moon of Kartika, and Wikipedia notes that the ghats are lit with more than a million earthen lamps in honor of the Ganga. Nearly 100,000 pilgrims come to watch the river aglitter, and the evening aarti involves 21 young priests and 24 young women. Expect dense crowds and book lodging and boat rides well ahead of the date. The five-day festival begins on Prabodhini Ekadashi, and rituals include kartik snan, a ritual bath in the Ganges, deepdan lamp offerings and the Ganga aarti, so arriving a day or two early lets you see the build-up as well as the main night.

6. Hampi, Karnataka

Best months: October to February · Status: UNESCO World Heritage Site · Best for: history and cycling

Hampi was the capital of the Vijayanagara empire and by 1500 CE ranked as the world's second-largest city after Beijing, per Karnataka.com. The site spans about 4,100 hectares on the Tungabhadra river and includes the Virupaksha and Vittala temples and the Lotus Mahal. Its monuments date from between 1336 and 1570 and show Dravidian architecture, and the city fell to the Deccan sultanates in 1565. Summer from March to June is excessively hot, which is why winter is the recommended season. The nearest rail station is Hospet Junction, 13 kilometers away, and Hubli Airport is 170 kilometers away, so allow transfer time.

7. Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep), Andaman Islands

Distance: about 41 km northeast of Port Blair · Famous beach: Radhanagar, Blue Flag certified in 2020 · Best for: diving and beaches

Havelock is officially named Swaraj Dweep, renamed in December 2018, covers 92.2 square kilometers and is reached by government and private ferries including Makruzz and Nautika, plus helicopter and seaplane services, according to Wikipedia. Activities include certified scuba diving at Dixon's Pinnacle, snorkeling at Elephant Beach and kayaking through mangroves. Radhanagar was named Best Beach in Asia by Time magazine in 2004, and the island has about 6,351 residents. Ferry schedules and sea conditions change, so confirm crossings before building a tight itinerary.

8. Goa

Daytime temperatures: 25 to 33°C · Peak: December and January · Best for: beaches and nightlife

Winter is Goa's peak season, with sunny, low-humidity days and 20 to 25°C evenings, per Unpaqd's winter guide. November is quieter, with hotel rates quoted around INR 2,000 to 5,000 a night, while Christmas, New Year's Eve and the Sunburn festival in late December bring the biggest crowds. South Goa is calmer than North Goa. Unpaqd advises booking December and January stays three to six months ahead, visiting mid-week to avoid weekend crowds and using SPF 50 sunscreen. Sunburn tickets were quoted at INR 7,000 to 20,000. For beach comparisons beyond India, see our list of the best winter sun destinations for 2026-2027.

9. Kohima and the Hornbill Festival, Nagaland

Dates: December 1-10, 2026 · Venue: Naga Heritage Village, Kisama · Best for: cultural festivals

Known as the "Festival of Festivals," Hornbill brings together traditional performances, indigenous cuisine, handicrafts and sports, as Shikhar's festival guide describes. Access is via Dimapur Airport or railway station, then by road to Kohima. That guide does not cover foreign-visitor permits, so check current requirements with Tourism Nagaland and Indian government sources before booking. December is peak season in Kohima, so book accommodation early, and pack warm clothing for cool evenings and comfortable walking shoes.

10. Himalayan Snow: Auli, Manali and Gulmarg

Season: December to March; Gulmarg from November · Best for: skiing and snow views

The Culture Trip's winter roundup highlights Auli in Uttarakhand, which hosts a national skiing championship in January and has Asia's longest cable car, plus Manali and Shimla in Himachal Pradesh. It lists Gulmarg and Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir for skiing from November to April. Thomas Cook's winter list adds Dharamshala and Rishikesh. Check your government's current travel advisory for Jammu and Kashmir before planning.

People also ask

What is the best month to visit India?

Is India good to visit in December?

Yes, December is peak season for many regions. Goa has beach weather and big festivals, Nagaland hosts the Hornbill Festival from December 1-10, and Kerala's backwaters are in their dry season. Book flights and lodging early, because December and January are the busiest months.

Which part of India has the best winter weather?

The south and west are warmest. Goa daytime highs run 25 to 33°C, and Kerala sits in its October-to-March window. Rajasthan is pleasant by day but cooler at night. Himalayan areas such as Auli, Manali and Gulmarg offer snow instead.

Do Americans need a visa for India?

Yes. US citizens can apply for an e-Tourist visa online, valid for 30 days, 1 year or 5 years, at least 4 days before arrival. Passports need six months' validity and two blank pages, and rules can change, so confirm on the official portal.

When do tiger reserves open in India?

How long should I spend in India on a first trip?

Yes. Many travelers pair Kerala's backwaters and Ayurveda with Goa, Hampi or Mumbai. Kerala Tourism lists Ayurvedic treatment centers in Alappuzha, and the October-to-March window overlaps with most other southern winter destinations.
