Saudi Flight Cancellations Deepen: What Travelers Booked Through an Agency Need to Know

Flights to and from Saudi Arabia remain heavily disrupted as of October 16, 2026. Cirium data cited by Gulf News shows 552 of 1,178 scheduled Saudi departures on October 15 were cancelled or did not operate, a 46.9% disruption rate, with Riyadh the worst-hit airport. Travelers booked through an agency should check flight status now, ask their agent to pursue rebooking or a refund before departure, and confirm the airline's rules in writing.

What is new since yesterday's Riyadh update

Quick facts: Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport is suspended through October 17, and several carriers have pushed suspensions into late October or into 2027.

Our October 15 Riyadh update covered the airport itself. Today's report adds full-day Saudi figures and carrier-by-carrier timelines, which show the disruption spreading beyond one airport and running longer than many bookings assume. The Gulf News status report, updated October 16, is the source for these figures. It ties the disruption to the wider US-Iran conflict and regional security concerns, while noting that some cancellations may have other causes.

Which Saudi airports and carriers are hit hardest

Quick facts: On October 15, Riyadh had 298 of 366 departures cancelled or not operated, a rate of 81.4%.

Dammam ran at 45.8% and Abha at 45.5%, while Jeddah was lower at 22.6%. Among Saudi carriers, Saudia recorded 57.1% of departures disrupted, Flyadeal 45% and Flynas 44%. Choosing a Saudi carrier does not avoid the problem, so agents should check the operating airline on every segment.

How UAE and international carriers are responding

Quick facts: Emirates cancelled all eight of its scheduled Saudi departures on October 15, and Etihad has Riyadh and Dammam flights cancelled through October 18.

flydubai is not operating to Abha, AlUla, Dammam, Riyadh and several other Saudi cities, while some Jeddah, Madinah, Tabuk and Gassim services continue. Air Arabia has cancelled several Sharjah routes to Saudi cities, along with two Sharjah-Kuwait flights. Recovery outside the region is uneven. Lufthansa's Munich-Dubai service resumes October 25, British Airways' Dubai service resumes November 3, and Air France's Dubai and Riyadh services are suspended through October 24. Cathay Pacific's Dubai and Riyadh flights are cancelled through January 31, 2027, the longest window reported.

The Tel Aviv and Iran-related disruptions

Quick facts: flydubai's Tel Aviv services remain affected after a September 30 security incident involving flight FZ1073.

Emirates has suspended codeshare operations on the affected routes. The UAE's suspension of flights by Iranian airlines remains in place until further notice. These are separate from the Saudi network but add to the itineraries that may need changing. Travelers connecting through Dubai or Abu Dhabi should check every segment.

What agency clients can ask an airline to do

Quick facts: Cathay Pacific's 2026 agent guidelines allow rebooking without a change fee when the new date falls within one week of the original, and refunds without penalty when no acceptable alternative exists.

The guidelines apply to CX Validated tickets issued in the USA, Canada and Latin America, and run through December 31, 2026. Rebooking must be completed before the original departure date to avoid a no-show fee, and the length of stay must stay the same. The document does not define a numeric threshold for a "significant" schedule change, so agents should ask the airline directly for the criteria. Cathay Pacific's schedule change guidelines are a practical checklist of what to request from any carrier.

Canadian and US passenger rules that apply

Quick facts: Canada's Air Passenger Protection Regulations require rebooking or refunds, and compensation depends on what caused the cancellation.

For cancellations within the airline's control, large airlines owe $400 for a 3 to 6 hour arrival delay, $700 for 6 to 9 hours and $1,000 for 9 hours or more. Passengers who take a refund instead of rebooking are still owed the inconvenience payment. For cancellations outside the airline's control, such as security events, air traffic control instructions or severe weather, the airline must complete the itinerary or rebook. The Canadian Transportation Agency's highlights page sets out these categories, and passengers have one year to claim compensation from the operating airline, as Travelsort explains. Qantas's agency guidance on the same Canadian requirements is also useful for agents.

US departures follow a separate rule. The Department of Transportation's automatic refund requirement, which Checkbook reported as taking effect in October 2024, requires refunds within seven business days for credit card purchases when a flight is cancelled and the passenger does not accept an alternative. It applies to ticket agents as well as airlines. That article was last updated in October 2024, so confirm the rule's current status before relying on it.

What it means for travelers who book through an agency

An agent is the first call, but the airline controls seat inventory and fare rules. Ask your agent for three things today: the new flight numbers and times in writing, the rebooking options the airline has offered, and a refund confirmation if no workable alternative exists. Nonrefundable fares may still qualify for a refund or a free change when the airline cancels or significantly changes the flight, but the rules depend on the carrier and the ticket.

People also ask

The Canadian Transportation Agency's overview of the regulations is a useful starting point for the questions travelers ask most often about cancellations.

Can I get a refund if my Saudi flight is cancelled?

Often yes, though the route depends on the airline and the cause, and passenger-rights guides vary in detail. If the airline cancels and no acceptable alternative is offered, you can usually request a refund instead of rebooking. Ask your agent to submit the request through the airline's official channel and keep the confirmation. Do not submit the same refund twice, since duplicates can generate an airline debit memo.

Does the airline have to rebook me if my flight is cancelled?

Under Canada's rules, yes, and airlines have tried to avoid some of them in court. A large airline must rebook on its next available flight, or on one under a commercial agreement, in the same class of service. If that flight does not leave within 9 hours of the original departure, the airline must consider rebooking on another carrier. Rebooking with another airline is also required within 48 hours of the end of an event outside the airline's control, where a competing option exists.

Does the US automatic refund rule cover tickets bought through an agent?

Yes, the rule applies to ticket agents as well as airlines. Refunds must be issued within seven business days for credit card purchases and within 20 calendar days for other payment methods. The refund must cover the full ticket price, minus any portion already used, plus taxes and fees.

Am I owed compensation if a security event causes the cancellation?

Canada's guidance does not list compensation for cancellations outside the airline's control, such as security events, air traffic control instructions and severe weather. In those cases the airline must complete the itinerary or rebook you. Compensation rules differ for cancellations within the airline's control, and a May 2026 Canadian passenger guide sets out those amounts in more detail.

Should I still go to the airport if my flight shows as on time?

Yes, check again before you leave. Gulf News advises checking flight status even when a booking was confirmed earlier, completing online check-in where available, and arriving at least three hours early, or four hours for flydubai departures from Dubai.

How do I check whether a Gulf flight has been cancelled?

Use the airline's app or website, and ask your agent to confirm the status by flight number and date. Check every segment of a connecting itinerary, since a cancelled leg can break the rest of the trip.
