Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan, is strategically located where the Blue Nile and White Nile rivers merge to form the main Nile River. [14, 18] This confluence, known as Al-Mogran, is a defining feature of the city. [7, 11] Khartoum forms a large metropolitan area with its sister cities, Khartoum North (Bahri) and Omdurman. [14, 18] Historically a significant trading post and administrative center, Khartoum showcases a blend of African and Arab cultures. [9, 11, 14] **IMPORTANT NOTE:** As of May 2025, the Government of Canada advises Canadians to **AVOID ALL TRAVEL** to Sudan, including Khartoum, due to ongoing armed conflict, civil unrest, and a highly volatile security situation. [4] Heavy fighting since April 2023 has severely disrupted essential services, including medical care, banking, power, and communications, and access to necessities like food and water is extremely challenging. [4] Khartoum International Airport remains closed, and overland travel is extremely hazardous. [4, 13, 19, 21, 25] Consular assistance is severely limited. [4, 19, 21] This guide provides information on Khartoum's points of interest, but travel is not currently recommended.
